Through the first seven months of 2015, the FDA has now refused a total of 286 entry lines of shrimp products for reasons related to banned antibiotics. As shown in the chart below, the amount of entry line refusals so far this year substantially exceeds the number of refusals historically reported by FDA. In fact, with five months left in the year, the FDA has already refused more shrimp entry lines for banned antibiotics in 2015 than it reported in total during the six-year time period spanning from 2002 through 2007 (246). Moreover, while 2014 was the previous record year for such entry line refusals, the number of refusals reported for this year thus far exceeds the cumulative total reported by the FDA in 2013 and 2014 (283).
All of the entry line refusals reported for July regarded shrimp shipped from Malaysia:
- Lean Heng Huat Fishery (Malaysia), a company listed on Import Alert 16-129 for nitrofurans on March 10, 2015 and listed on Import Alert 16-124 on March 13, 2015 (for chloramphenicol), had twenty-three entry lines refused for shrimp contaminated with both nitrofurans and veterinary drug residues in the Los Angeles District (18) and the Southwest Import District (5), along with another five entry lines refused for shrimp contaminated with veterinary drug residues in the Southwest Import District;
- Fishergold Cold Storage Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia), a company listed on Import Alert 16-129 for nitrofurans on March 10, 2015 but not currently listed on Import Alert 16-124, had seventeen entry lines refused for shrimp contaminated with nitrofurans and salmonella in the Southwest Import District (9) and the Los Angeles District (8) and one entry line refused for shrimp contaminated with veterinary drug residues and salmonella in the Southwest Import District;
- CAB Food Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia), a company newly listed (July 28, 2015) on Import Alert 16-124 for chloramphenicol but not currently listed on Import Alert 16-129, had six entry lines refused for shrimp contaminated with veterinary drug residues in the Southwest Import District (4) and the Los Angeles District (2);
- Wei Lean Aquaculture Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia), a company not currently listed on either Import Alert 16-124 or Import Alert 16-129, had one entry line refused for shrimp contaminated with veterinary drug residues in the Los Angeles District; and
- Ria Budimas Trading (Malaysia), a company listed on Import Alert 16-129 for nitrofurans on March 2, 2015 at two different addresses but not currently listed on Import Alert 16-124, had one entry line refused for shrimp contaminated with both nitrofurans and veterinary drug residues in the Chicago District.
