Sampled restaurants selling U.S. wild-caught shrimp in at least one dish

The Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA) is taking aggressive action to address the deceptive marketing of farm-raised imported shrimp as U.S. wild-caught shrimp, funding cutting-edge genetic testing of shrimp served at a random selection of restaurants across the Gulf Coast and South Atlantic through SeaD Consulting. The results reveal a pervasive problem of false advertising, seafood substitution, and economic fraud, further underscoring the need for stronger laws at both the state and federal levels to prevent consumer deception.

SeaD Consulting’s reports use a representative sampling of restaurants. Therefore, the following should not be considered a comprehensive list of all area restaurants serving U.S. wild-caught shrimp. It is also based on testing a single dish. Some restaurants use both imported farmed shrimp and U.S. wild-caught shrimp, meaning consumers should always ask about the origin of shrimp before they order.
