NPR’s Around the Nation aired an 8-minute segment that highlighted marketing efforts in South Carolina that distinguish local wild-caught shrimp from the almost 90 percent of the shrimp eaten in the U.S. imported from farms from China, Indonesia and Thailand.
“A South Carolina Shrimper Stays Afloat” by Thomas Pierce profiles third-generation Charleston, SC shrimper Captain Wayne Magwood, who for the past 40-years has run a successful market by the docks. Magwood keeps a list of the Charleston-area restaurants that serve his shrimp.
“These restaurants — along with loyal customers — are the only thing keeping many South Carolina shrimpers in business.”
