Jimmy Buffett would like to collect used cooking oil and distribute it to commercial fishermen along the coast to use as fuel for their boats according to “The Grease Experiment” by Maggie McGuane in the June/July 2010 issue of Garden & Gun.
Myrtle Beach is the testing ground for the project based on the presence of a Margaritaville restaurant producing gallons of used fry oil every week, a struggling local shrimping economy, and chefs with a desire to wean themselves off imported seafood. Captain Neal Cooksey allowed his trawler, the Hailey Marie, to have its engines retrofitted to burn the vegetable oil in an experiment that could make high diesel prices a thing of the past.
