Drill Conductor Training & other updates

From Lindsey Parker:

We are going to host FREE safety courses in March. AMSEA (Alaska Marine Safety Education Association) is covering the cost for commercial fishermen.

  •          Drill Conductor Training course on Saturday, March 21, 8AM -9PM.  (This class is usually $175, but it is FREE for commercial fishermen.)
  •          Sunday, March 22, 8AM – 3PM, a class titled “Upright & Watertight: Fishing Vessel Stability Awareness & Damage Control for Commercial Fishermen,” a Fishing Vessel Stability course.
  •          Sunday March 22, 3PM – 4:30PM,a class titled “Strains, Sprains and Pains: Ergonomic Injury Prevention for Commercial Fishermen,” an Ergonomics training course. The Drill Conductor course class size is limited, likely 18-20, so I’d like to get some feedback as to how many are interested in this offering, and the others. With sufficient interest we might plan to do more than one training. We might even plan one out of the Skidaway Marine Extension office or other location to keep traveling down if interest is sufficient.

GA Sea Grant has accomplished the task of getting the videos we’ve accumulated over the years, ‘fisheries videos’, online. With a good internet connection you should be able to watch the following:
A Century of Shrimping: Portrait of an American Industry
Shrimp Trawls: Design and Performance
Fishing All My Days
Harvesting Georgia’s Shrimp
Underwater Investigations of Bycatch Reduction Devices
Effects of Knot Orientation-NOAA
Knot Orientation: What is it and is it important?
Requirements and Procedures for Inspecting Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs)- NOAA English or Spanish

Less interesting is the December 1 USCG Marine Safety Bulletin, that reminds us that the Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Inspection decals will be MANDATORY as of October 15 this year, along with a few other changes coming up.
